Evaluation of New Tools for Malaria Vector Control in Cameroon: Focus on Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets
نویسندگان
چکیده
BACKGROUND From 2006 to 2011, biological activity of insecticides for Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS), conventional treatment of nets (CTNs) or long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) was evaluated before their approval in Cameroon. The objective of the study was to select the best tools for universal malaria vector control coverage. METHODOLOGY Bioassays were performed using WHO cones and the Kisumu susceptible strain of Anopheles gambiae s.s.. Among tested products, residual activity and wash resistance of Alpha-cypermethrin LLINs (Interceptor) and CTNs (Fendona) were assessed during 5 months in the Ntougou neighborhood. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS All the 14 tested products were found effective (95-100% knockdown and mortality rates), although a significant decrease of efficacy was seen with lambda-cyhalothrinWP IRS, alpha-cypermethrin CTNs and LLINs (p< 0.05). However, the efficacy of Interceptor nets did not decrease during the 5 months evaluation, even after 25 washes (0.07<p< 0.9). Meanwhile Fendona SC nets displayed a drastic decrease of activity after 5 washes, odds ratio was 3.07 (1.0-8.59). CONCLUSION This study provided useful data for decision making and community education toward universal coverage of malaria vector control in Cameroon.

Great eff ort is expended in understanding the eff ect of malaria control interventions on the plasmodium parasite and its anopheles mosquito vector. However, no intervention will work unless it is properly used, and human behaviour is not always carefully considered during controlled trials of vector control interventions. Malaria is considered to be the most prevalent vectorborne disease worldwide. For its prevention, it is necessary to have an appropriate and timely care program for patients and successful integrated and selective control of the vector species (Rafinejad et al. 2008). This control in highly endemic countries relies largely on one of two main methods: insecticide-treated (mosquito) nets (ITNs) a...

BACKGROUND The effectiveness of pyrethroid-treated bednets for malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa is under threat because of high levels of resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in the vectors. Here we assess the durability of polyethylene nets with a novel combination of permethrin, a pyrethroid, with pyriproxyfen, an insect juvenile mimic (PPF-LLIN), in comparison with a typical permethrin...

Due to the rapid extension of pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors worldwide, manufacturers are developing new vector control tools including insecticide mixtures containing at least two active ingredients with different mode of action as part of insecticide resistance management. Olyset® Plus is a new long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) incorporating permethrin and a synergist, piperonyl ...

Continuous monitoring of vector species composition, abundance, dynamics, feeding pattern, and host finding strategy is the base to determine when, what, and how control should be implemented. Thus, this study was conducted to assess entomological parameters of anopheline mosquitoes in nine villages in Seka district, southwestern Ethiopia, from June to December 2012. Mosquito collection was car...
